Toefl Essay Examples - promotion is based on seniority or on performance

Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement - promotion is based on seniority or on performance.

Any work needs a push at times in order to continue to do it in the best way possible.
That is exactly how I understand the meaning of the word ‘promotion’. The employer, the company or organization we work at decide the possible way on which it would be based. Promotion also depends on the relations we have with our colleagues. I strongly believe that a promotion based on seniority is better for us if we do like our job and prefer to perform our duties well at this particular company than the one based on performance.
To begin with, if we work as young attorneys in a company where there are plenty of others like us, for example, the promotions at the end of the year would most probably be based on seniority rather than on our performance throughout the year. It is because of the fact that this type of companies usually has two, three or more senior attorneys who usually own it and they would decide who would be promoted next. They are the people in charge and would make the final decision. Moreover, that decision will has something to do with the years you have spent working for this company including your good results as an attorney as well. Because of the hope that next time it could be us, we continue working at the same place and try to perform our duties well. In my opinion, it is the advantage to move forward in your chosen career if you like your job and especially doing it at that particular place. You will definitely be noticed after some years of hard work and get the promotion you desire for.
On the other hand, the advantage to get a promotion based on our performance, for some people, may seem the faster way to be noticed and probably, it is indeed. However, it also depends on the place where you work and with whom you work - who runs the company, what are your relations with your colleagues, do they all work as if you do or just pretend to do so. Moreover, your colleagues could be the people who could lend you a hand in asking your boss for a promotion by saying only good things for you and your ‘devotion’ to the work. Admittedly, your boss is the man who will make the final decision but he definitely will have in mind that you are the person deserving that promotion in particular. In my view, this also seems a possible way to get a promotion but quicker in the course of time than the one mentioned above.
To summarize, promotions could be based on seniority or on performance but they all depend on our employer, our desire to work for him a considerable amount of time or on our mutual understanding with the colleagues and the certainty that they could be there for us when we need the help required.
